A Camp Verde High School trap shooter is heading to National High School Rodeo Finals in his first year of competing.

Chance Weir, a junior at CVHS, won the state championship for trap shooting in the Arizona High School Rodeo Association shooting competition June 2 in Gilbert. This is his first year in the AHSRA and his first year shooting competitively.

“It is exciting,” Weir said. “I am excited to compete at Nationals.”

Trap shooting is a form of competitive clay pigeon shooting. Instead of using live pigeons like in the olden days, one house releases the clay targets. Using a shotgun, the shooter moves through five different positions and tries to hit as many as he or she can of the 25 targets. This is the first year the AHSRA held the shooting contest in order to qualify for the national finals competition.

Weir won the title with a lead of eight clay pigeons hit. He also took second place in the .22 long rifle competition.
