This year’s black belt candidates of KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do are giving back to their community.

Black belt candidates, from left, Sara Jewell, Sierra Romero, Tim Moser, Leah Kinsey, Amy Romero and Ron Romero, landscape a project at Rainbow Acres, a care facility for adults with developmental disabilities on Camp Verde’s Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and AmeriCorps Day of Service. The black belt candidates of KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do are required to complete two service projects in the community as part of earning their black belts. The 10 students are taking serious the last line of the KC’s Family Tae Kwon Do Student Creed, which reads, “Friendship ... gives strength to my community,” on their path to earning their coveted black belts by volunteering in Cottonwood throughout this month and completing two major community service projects.

The students, who range from 10-year-olds to 40-year-olds, decided to do their first project with a local senior center since one of the students, first-degree black belt candidate Patty Jonas, volunteered at one during her son Luke’s second-degree black belt training time.
