The Mingus Union High School golf team didn’t make it to state last season, but the team returns with a strong group of golfers who hope to change that this year.

Mingus Union High School golf team members practice their drives Aug. 22. The team will play two home games and one tournament in Cornville this seasonThe Marauders golf team was one of the top teams in Northern Arizona last year, but the Arizona Interscholastic Association’s redistricting made it difficult for the team to qualify for state.

“It is competitive in Northern Arizona,” Head Coach Craig Mai said. “We didn’t meet our goals, but this year we will change that.”

Mai, who is returning for his fifth year as head coach, explained that when the AIA changes were put into place for golf three years ago, only the top two in the region qualified for state. The qualifying score had to be within five strokes of the course’s overall par. Last year, the AIA changed the qualifying score to two strokes. For the 2012 season, the AIA adjusted the score to four strokes.

“This season we are focusing on our short game,” Mai said. “And our goal is to make it to state.”
