The Mingus Union High School swim team’s season-opener showcased the three Northern Arizona powerhouses of the pool.

Riley Fielitz dives in to swim for the Mingus Union High School swim team in the 100-yard freestyle during a home meet for the team Thursday, Sept. 6.The Marauders faced tough competition Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Cottonwood City Pool against the Sedona Scorpions, Flagstaff Eagles and Fredonia Lynx.

“It’s a really tight race between Flagstaff, Sedona and us,” assistant MUHS coach Tyler Novak said during the meet. “We are at the .500 mark, and it is too early to tell who will win.”

With a young team, the Marauders took second, behind Sedona, in both the girls and boys competitions.

“Overall, I thought the meet was a successful opener to our season,” new MUHS Head Coach Brendon Kenney said. “I thought all of the kids who swam today proved that they can compete on a high level, and I am pleased with times for the first meet of season.”

The girls team earned 151 points, only eight points behind the Scorpions’ 159. The Eagles were just one point behind the Marauders, coming in third place with 150. The Lynx placed fourth with 47 points.
