Marauders now 0-3 with loss to Trojans

In the history of Mingus Marauders football, 0-3 starts are like Gila monsters: You know they exist, but you rarely ever see them.

Quarterback Micah Nevarez lines the Mingus offense up in their game against Paradise Valley on Friday, Sept. 13 in Cottonwood. But this season, after graduating most of last season’s starting lineup, the Marauders have start-ed 0-3 with a group of mostly inexperienced varsity players who have faced a brutal early season schedule.

With losses so far to the 3-0 Snowflake Lobos, at the 2-1 Cactus Cobras, and Friday night’s 28-6 home loss to the 3-0 Paradise Valley Trojans, the Marauders are searching for answers as they head out on the road for their next two games at North this Friday, Sept. 20, and at Bradshaw Mountain on Friday, Sept. 27.

“We’ve just got to get better. When you’re not very good, you lose,” Marauders head coach Bob Young said. “Right now, the coaches aren’t doing a very good job, it’s just ... poor coaching right now, so we’ve got to get better.”

Young said he thought the Mingus defense, which held the Trojans to just seven points through the first three quarters, played really well, but that the Marauders’ problems exist mainly on the offensive side of the ball.

“We played toe to toe with them, [but] it didn’t have anything to do with them, we didn’t do a very good job,” Young said. “We had bad reads, we’ve just got to do a better job of reading.
“I think that our line did a little bit better tonight, but we didn’t throw the ball very well.”
