Mingus Union High School used the Desert Vista Last Chance Invitational to show why it remains the favorite to capture a third straight state track title beginning Friday, May 9.

Senior Heather Calandra, tops in Division III and second-best among all Arizona high school girls in the shot put, weaves around a series of cones at Mingus Union High School to build throwing power Thursday, May 1. Calandra, who will attend the University of Maryland next season, and the rest of the Marauders girls track and field team could capture their third straight state title Saturday, May 10.
Sophomore Megan Goettl got her second gold medal with a personal record in the 3,200 meters at the invitational, while seniors Ryan Talbot and Justine Taylor also medaled April 30, as the Marauders girls team prepares for a shot at its third straight Division III state championship.

“It’s not going to be easy,” said head track coach Yancey DeVore. “State’s always a challenge.”
