The Mingus Union High School boys basketball team lost to the Cactus Shadows Falcons [7-2], 85-63, in front of a home crowd on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Despite the score, the Marauders [5-4] played strongly, especially in the first half, and never slowed down in the second.

Senior forward Alex Brewer shoots over the reach of a Cactus Shadows player Tuesday, Dec. 11, during the second quarter of the Mingus Union High School boys varsity basketball game against Cactus Shadows in Cottonwood. Brewer scored 10 points in the 85-63 loss to the Falcons. The boys will host Coconino High School on Friday, Dec. 14, at MUHS.“I thought they played with toughness and determination,” said Mark Owens, the Marauders head coach.

Cactus Shadows is one of the top teams in Division II,  and Owens said that the Division III Marauders play a lot of games against teams in the upper division.

“In order to make the state playoffs or even sectionals, we’re going against these Phoenix teams,” Owens said. “This game was definitely a good barometer for us.”

Senior Rashonn Montgomery led the Marauders with 20 points and three rebounds. Senior Alex Brewer had 10 points and four rebounds. Freshman Ashton Loring, who played in the junior varsity game, came off the bench with two perfect 3-pointers.

The Falcons won the tipoff, but the Marauders took the lead early with two baskets made by senior Tyler Herndon. Senior Troy Carter set up a layup for Brewer after a fight for the ball, and Montgomery sank two 3-pointers. Montgomery also broke up a pass and had a good block on defense.

By the middle of the first quarter the intensity was high and the pace was fast. The Marauders were up 14-10, but the Falcons tied it up 14-14 after a steal and layup. Marauders junior Bryant Briscoe retook the lead for the Marauders with a layup of his own. However, Cactus Shadows rebounded and took hold of the lead. The Falcons made a 3-pointer at the first quarter buzzer putting them up 21-16.

A basket by Brewer and a 3-pointer by junior Micah Nevarez tied the game up at 22. The Marauders
