Fit Kids of Arizona hosted its fourth annual summer camp last week with numerous activities such as sports, games, hikes, swimming and field trips to keep kids active and healthy.Through the week of Monday, June 3, through Friday, June 7, more than 30 kids from Sedona, Camp Verde and Cottonwood took part in sports, games, picnics, hikes, arts and crafts and field trips throughout the Verde Valley.

“The goal is to get the kids active and learn about a healthy lifestyle,” said Megan Anderson, a registered dietician with Northern Arizona Healthcare who ran the camp. “We want to show them they can get excited about exercising, that exercising doesn’t necessarily mean going out and running. You can get the same amout of exercising playing basketball or doing other activities like that.”

The camp had planned field trips each day to get the kids out. On Monday, they toured the Cottonwood Police Department and Tuesday, they toured the Clarkdale Fire Department. Also on Tuesday, the kids got to go to the Cottonwood Rec Center Pool for an afternoon of swimming.

Wednesday seemed to be the favorite among the campers as they hiked to Mormon’s Crossing in Cornville and spent the day cooling off in the creek. On Friday, they went to the Verde Valley Medical Center for a visit with Guardian Air, the division of Flagstaff Medical Center that is dedicated to serving the emergency transport needs of Northern Arizona, the Southwest Region and Native American Nations.
