The Camp Verde Cowboys [1-3] lost to the Prescott Badgers [3-1] 68-33 at home on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Freshman Javier Perez No. 10, drives down court Dec. 4, during the Camp Verde High School varsity boys basketball game against Prescott High School. The Cowboys couldn’t keep up with the size and quickness of the Badgers and lost 68-33. The team will host its next home game after the holiday break when it takes on Bradshaw Mountain High School on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.The Cowboys battled it out defensively, but Prescott’s tall and quick weapons won them the game.

Despite the score, the Cowboys played strongly on defense considering that Prescott has a 6-foot-10-inch junior center and a 6-foot-8-inch senior forward who are not only tall but hustle and can shoot from both inside and outside. Prescott has six other players over 6 feet 1 inch, too, who have speed.

“We hung in there in the first half,” Cowboys head coach Dan Wall said. “We had 20 turnovers but were only down 15 points at half. So I loved our kids effort defensively — especially in the first half.”

When Cowboy senior Taylor Hicks faced 6-foot-10-inch Badger Cameron Gilbert on the tip-off, Gilbert was a head taller than Hicks. But Hicks played with excellent coverage on Gilbert the entire night.

Prescott played with a full-court press and zone defense while Camp Verde played man-to-man.

The game was scoreless for the first few minutes until Prescott was able to get a basket. Intensity was high and the pace was fast, but both teams had trouble holding on to the ball.

With their opponents being so tall and quick, the Cowboys were focused on getting back on defense. Cowboy junior Mitch Lathem stole the ball. Hicks rebounded his own shot and attempted to shoot again but was blocked. Camp Verde got the ball back, but Prescott stole the ball and scored on a layup.

The Badgers were able to put up 17 points before Latham
