The Camp Verde High School girls basketball team [13-4] lost to the Prescott Badgers [12-3], 54-36, in its first regular season home game of 2012 on Friday, Jan. 4. The Cowboys had an unusually tough time, unable to the take the lead in the game against the Badgers.

Sophomore Kayla Sandoval looks to score Friday, Jan. 4, during the Camp Verde High School girls basketball game against Prescott in Camp Verde. Sandoval and her varsity teammates lost 54-36 to the Badgers and will hit the road Thursday, Jan. 10, to play Northwest Christian Academy in Phoenix. The girl’s next home game is Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 5:30 p.m., against Mayer High School.Cowboys team leader Donnie Buss was only playing at 70 percent due to a foot injury she received over Christmas break. The trainer released her to play Friday morning.

“Defensively in the first half, we did a nice job taking care of the things we needed to take care of,” said Mark Showers, the Cowboys’ head coach. “One of the problems we’ve had is we’ll have a few mental lapses. So we’ll give up an easy basket. We can’t have those mental breakdowns like that, especially against a team like [Prescott]. They had all their horses tonight and knew what they needed to do.”
