Calandra aims to shot put at Olympics

A small-town girl has big-time potential in the shot put ring.

Mingus Union High School track star Heather Calandra practices different shot put throwing  techniques at the school track field on Tuesday Feb. 19.Heather Calandra, a junior at Mingus Union High School, is already a state champion shot putter in just her second year of competing in the event, and she has been working with an Olympic-level thrower during the offseason to become even stronger.

Calandra has been working with Mike DiQuattro since the end of August.

DiQuattro, an athlete who has been a top thrower at both the high school and college levels, competed in the Olympic Trials in 1988.
