Redistricting is on the agenda this week at the Camp Verde Town Council’s regular board meeting, set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, Aug. 17.

The town’s elected leaders are expected to discuss which proposed map they prefer when it comes to redrawing the lines in Yavapai County. Following the 2010 Census, Yavapai County was found to have passed the population threshold that requires a county to be divided into five districts instead of three.

Some of the proposed maps suggested by the county’s redistricting commission would separate Camp Verde from the rest of the Verde Valley when it comes to representation from a county supervisor.

The council will also potentially approve creating a new economic development director position. The position would be filled by former town Finance Director Melissa Preston, who was recently put into the town’s special projects director job while waiting for the new position to be created.

The economic development director will devote time to, among other things, attracting and retaining business in Camp Verde.

The finance director’s job was filled by Michael Showers, hired last month by Town Manager Russ Martin.

In other business, the council is expected to:

• Discuss the potential sale of town-owned land on the west side of Cliffs Parkway, the west side of McCracken Lane and at the intersection of State Route 260 and Oasis Road. The town also may decide to attempt to trade the land.
• Listen to a presentation from Yavapai County Assessor Pam Pearsall on how new legislation is expected to affect commercial property tax rates, something that will have no effect on Camp Verde town government since the town doesn’t collect property taxes.
• Discuss a number of resolutions before the League of Arizona Cities and Towns to decide which ones they want to support. The measures are varied, from issues dealing with funding for the Arizona State Parks System and renewable energy financing to suggestions to change the rules governing tattoo parlors and penalties for graffiti.
• Officially adopt the town budget for the current fiscal year as a public document.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17, at Camp Verde Town Hall, 473 S. Main St., Room 106.
