If Arizona were a dart board, Camp Verde would be pretty close to the bull’s-eye.

The Camp Verde Cavalry adds Western flair to the background of the afternoon’s festivity as Mayor Bob Burnside introduces the brand new Center of Arizona monument in Rezzonico Park on Sunday, April 1. Gov. Jan Brewer issued a proclamation declaring the day as Center of Arizona Day.That’s why dozens of people gathered in windswept Rezzonico Family Park on Sunday, April 1.

It may have been April Fool’s Day, but this wasn’t a prank.

They were there to mark the official unveiling of a metal sculpture marking Camp Verde as the geographic center of Arizona.

Well, close enough, anyway.

The center was determined by the Arizona Professional Land Surveyors group using a series of tools and equations to find which spot of land is in the exact center of this irregularly-shaped state.

The actual center happens to be in a bit of barely accessible wilderness.

The group then decided to pick a town closest to the spot to give the new monument to.
