From dogs being banished from the farmer’s market to the approval of civil unions around the Verde Valley, 2013 brought in some changes.A 42-year-old pilot from Oklahoma crashes his plane into a fence after he mistakes the road next to the Cottonwood Airport for the actual runway in mid-May. The pilot only suffered minor injuries in the crash.

January

1) The city of Cottonwood agrees to take steps to mitigate nuisance problems at the dog park by Riverfront Park. Some nearby residents had complained of the noise and smell.

The city agreed to erect some earthen berms to help dampen the sound, rearrange different areas of the park and to make signs with the rules more visible.

2) The town of Clarkdale receives a $420,000 grant from the Walton Family Foundation, a group set up by the family that made its fortune from Walmart stores.

Some of the money will be used for what’s known as the Verde River@Clarkdale project, to build more expansive public river access near Tuzigoot.

The other part of the money will be used for the town’s Water Resource Management program.
