Petition seeks vote on food tax

The Town of Camp Verde will be looking at what steps to take this week regarding opposition to a sales tax on food.For many families, grocery shopping for the week is done on Sundays, and people hustle and bustle in and out of Camp Verde’s grocery store. The Town Council recently cleared the way for a food tax, which did not sit well with the public. A petition to bring the issue to the ballot has garnered enough signatures to pass.

The town currently charges no tax on food, a practice that differs from neighboring communities.

Town finds financing for new community library

The construction of a new library in Camp Verde is back on track.Camp Verde’s Public Library has outgrown its building. After months of uncertainty, the library has cleared its financial hurdles and can begin construction when final bids are in place.

Financing has been arranged, according to a report from Town Manager Russ Martin’s office.

Schools assess four-day week

The Camp Verde Unified School District is taking a look at how the new four-day school week has been going.Students in Tina Scott’s digital media class busily work on projects during sixth period. While the school days are slightly longer, the four-day school week has been well received.

It’s still early, as the elimination of Friday classes has only been in effect the current school year.

Jenn McCarthy is on an adventure.Jenn McCarthy is working as a volunteer and a camp host at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, one stop on her tour of the West. McCarthy is currently traveling for research on a book she’s writing. McCarthy is originally from Toronto, but for the past couple of decades she’s called Los Angeles home.

Last week, part of that adventure included being on office duty at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, where McCarthy is working as a volunteer and a camp host.

The Camp Verde Marshal’s Office responded to fewer calls last month than it did in September 2013, according to numbers released last week from the Town of Camp Verde.The Camp Verde Marshal's Office saw less crime in October vs. September.
