Local vet works with cat rescuers

A Town of Camp Verde veterinary clinic has been working with a cat rescue out of Flagstaff to make sure that some cats get medical treatment and, hopefully, new homes.Michelle Alagna, Certified Veterinary Technician at Montezuma Veterinary Services, lets Lady Grey out for a photo after much complaining of being locked up. The cat is part of a program the clinic is working with to find homes for cats in need.

Music plays on a dog day afternoon

Davin Kyllingstad can often be spotted walking around downtown Camp Verde with a giant animal.Davin Kyllingstad walks with his dog Kratos. Kyllingstad often is out and about giving one of his  family’s four large mastiffs, each weighing around 200 pounds, a little bit of exercise. When Kyllingstad isn’t working or hanging out with the dogs, he’s getting his band in shape. Ideally, he said, Valley Vibrations will be on a nearby stage by this time next year.

Town to rezone Clark Mansion

Long standing as a landmark in Clarkdale, the Clark Mansion was a fixture in the Verde Valley.Flames engulf historic Clark Mansion, which caught fire  sometime before 4:30 a.m. June 25, 2010. Clarkdale and Cottonwood fire departments and the Sedona, Camp Verde and Verde Valley fire districts all responded to battle the blaze. The building, built in the 1920s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was a total loss, but the site may be rezoned by the town of Clarkdale.

Couple takes on new tasks in feature film ‘Finding Neighbors’

When the Sedona International Film Festival kicks off this month, one of the films presented will give a former resident the opportunity to return to where she spent her formative years.Sam [Michael O’Keefe], right, a formerly-acclaimed graphic novelist tries to overcome a midlife crisis by making a connection with his neighbor, Jeff [Blake Bashoff], in “Finding Neighbors.” The film, produced by Verde Valley School graduate Jennifer Young, will screen at the 2014 Sedona International Film Festival on Sunday, Feb. 23.

Camp Verde rejects civil unions

The Town of Camp Verde decided last week not to pursue an ordinance recognizing civil unions.Camp Verde resident Jim Meredith speaks against the civil union ordinance, calling it a rash and hasty decision to bring the motion before the Camp Verde Town Council. The 3-3 tie vote means that under town code the motion died. Mayor Charlie German had been excused from the meeting.

Two banks robbed in a week

The Cottonwood Police Department is searching for a man who robbed a Cottonwood bank Tuesday, Feb. 11, who may also have robbed a Camp Verde bank on Feb. 4.This is a picture taken from security camera footage of the suspect. Anyone with information should contact Cottonwood Police at 634-4246 or the Camp Verde Marshal's Office at 554-8300.

Parents, teachers debate a four-day school week

Parents and school staff gathered last Wednesday, Jan. 29, at the Phillip England Center for the Performing Arts for a special forum to discuss the pros and cons of a potential four-day school week.Bob Weir, Camp Verde High School principal, answers questions of concerned parents on the topic of four-day weeks during the Camp Verde United School District open forum on Wednesday, Feb. 29. The panel consisted of CVUSD Superintendent Amber Lee, left, Camp Verde Elementary School Principal Debi Pottorff and Camp Verde Middle School Principal Danny Howe.

Architect picked for new communications center

The city of Cottonwood last week approved an $80,000 contract with Arrington Watkins, a Phoenix-based architectural firm, for the administration of construction of a new Emergency Communications Center.comm_center_1
