Schools look at four-day weeks

The Camp Verde Unified School District is closer to potentially implementing a four-day school week.Kitty McDowell’s fifth-grade class at Camp Verde Elementary School works on their keyboarding skills in the computer lab on Thursday, Jan. 16. While kids traditionally look forward to Friday being the last day of the school week, in Camp Verde that day may become Thursday, as the Camp Verde Unified School District is contemplating moving to a four-day week.

The governing board listened last week to the potential pros and cons at their monthly meeting.

Rainbow Acres earns arts grant

Rainbow Acres, a home for more than 90 adults with developmental disabilities affectionately referred to as ranchers, has been awarded a grant to help defray the costs of supplies for their Fine Arts Painting class.Debbie Tedford, a rancher at Rainbow Acres, proudly shows off her toucan painting on Thursday, Jan. 9, based on the stuffed bird hanging from the ceiling. Tedford has been going to the painting workshops put on by Michael Redhawk and Marlys Mallet, now that the establishment has funding for an art program.

Tigers arrive at new home

They didn’t have names as of last week, but two tiger cubs were already starting to fit in at Out of Africa Wildlife Park.Camp Verde’s Out of Africa Wildlife Park recently acquired two 7-month-old male Bengal tiger cubs, one orange and one white, believed to be brothers, that had been kept as pets in the Phoenix area. They weigh 120 pounds and despite their kitten-like playfulness, they could still do harm to an inexperienced person, even unintentionally.

The two arrived at the park after being transported up from the Phoenix area.

On break or at work, Wheeler handles kids

Allie Wheeler has called Arizona home ever since she moved here as a little girl.Allie Wheeler, of Rimrock, holds her son Dean Wheeler and her husband of eight years, Jake, moved down from Flagstaff about five years ago. Wheeler teaches fourth-grade math and science at Beaver Creek School. She also has three kids of her own, Alyssa, Luke and Dean.

Last Thursday, she was in Camp Verde, down from her home in Rimrock.

Election change lengthens terms

A law passed last year that took effect on Jan. 1 will change when elections are held in the Verde Valley and around the state.New laws come into effect with the new year. Some of the new laws concern voting in municipal elections in even-numbered years, pushing dates from March and May later in the year to August and November.

Mayors join in road fund fight

Mayors in the Verde Valley are joining with other mayors and politicians around Arizona in an effort to restore funding that was intended to help cities and towns care for the maintenance of their streets and roads.Camp Verde Mayor Charlie German has joined in a plea for the state to restore road and highway funding. Camp Verde has lost some funding, and as a result, road repairs have gone to the wayside. This intersection at Fifth Street and Hollamon is one that would potentially be repaired with the funds.

Ceremonies and celebrations mark 2013 in Verde Valley

From dogs being banished from the farmer’s market to the approval of civil unions around the Verde Valley, 2013 brought in some changes.A 42-year-old pilot from Oklahoma crashes his plane into a fence after he mistakes the road next to the Cottonwood Airport for the actual runway in mid-May. The pilot only suffered minor injuries in the crash.
