Nǐ hǎo, Cottonwood.Paul Tighe, superintendent of the Mingus Union High School District, left, was shadowed by Principal Ge Shimin, center, last week, who traveled to the Verde Valley from the Hebei province of China. In March, Tighe will have the opportunity to travel to China for a similar experience. Yifan Lewis, of Prescott, right, helped the two school leaders by acting as a translator.

Ge Shimin spent last week shadowing Paul Tighe, superintendent of the Mingus Union High School District.

Sonya Stanchfield was in the Verde Valley for the first time last week along with her husband, John.Sonya Stanchfield was in the Verde Valley for the first time last week with her husband, John, to see Sedona. An artist and a farmer, Sonya is originally from Oregon, and now resides in Colorado, where the two grow vegetables.

An artist and farmer, Stanchfield said she was drawn to the area because the couple wanted to check out Sedona.

Students prep for state FFA meet

Camp Verde High School students took first place in a regional National FFA Organization event in Chino Valley this month.The Camp Verde National FFA Organization recently went to Yavapai College’s Chino Valley campus to compete in Career Development Events. The Floriculture group placed first overall, with members, from left, Shayla Campbell, Elyssa Shiply, Mollie Petersen and Kyrsten Pedersen.

The event was at Yavapai College’s Agribusiness and Science Technology Center.

Russell plans keep working with grade-school children

Christa Russell has spent a lot of time around children.Christa Russell has been babysitting since she was 12, and now works with the afterschool programs at Cottonwood’s Recreation Center. Russell plans on starting school in January for a degree in early  childhood education.

“I’ve been babysitting since I was 12,” Russell said.
