Patty Jonas has the Internet to thank in large part for the way her family makes their living.Patty Jonas works at her family’s gun shop on Main Street in Camp Verde, which they’ve had for about three-and-a-half years. Her husband was a collector of World War II military weapons and items and eventually that hobby translated into a business. While they do sell the rifles lined up on racks against the walls, Jonas said most of their business comes from shoppers and collectors online.

Jonas was working last week behind the counter at her family’s gun shop on Main Street in Camp Verde.

Camp Verde will be discussing the possibility of recognizing civil unions at the next meeting of the Town Council.Camp Verde Town Councilman Bruce George is bringing the issue of civil unions to Camp Verde. While many think same-sex couples when the topic is brought up, George said this will be of great benefit to older unmarried couples, granting them visitation rights should they get sick. The other four municipalities in the Verde Valley have all passed civil union ordinances.

The Camp Verde Unified School District is closer to potentially implementing a four-day school week.Kitty McDowell’s fifth-grade class at Camp Verde Elementary School works on their keyboarding skills in the computer lab on Thursday, Jan. 16. While kids traditionally look forward to Friday being the last day of the school week, in Camp Verde that day may become Thursday, as the Camp Verde Unified School District is contemplating moving to a four-day week.

The governing board listened last week to the potential pros and cons at their monthly meeting.

Rainbow Acres, a home for more than 90 adults with developmental disabilities affectionately referred to as ranchers, has been awarded a grant to help defray the costs of supplies for their Fine Arts Painting class.Debbie Tedford, a rancher at Rainbow Acres, proudly shows off her toucan painting on Thursday, Jan. 9, based on the stuffed bird hanging from the ceiling. Tedford has been going to the painting workshops put on by Michael Redhawk and Marlys Mallet, now that the establishment has funding for an art program.

Tigers arrive at new home Print E-mail

They didn’t have names as of last week, but two tiger cubs were already starting to fit in at Out of Africa Wildlife Park.Camp Verde’s Out of Africa Wildlife Park recently acquired two 7-month-old male Bengal tiger cubs, one orange and one white, believed to be brothers, that had been kept as pets in the Phoenix area. They weigh 120 pounds and despite their kitten-like playfulness, they could still do harm to an inexperienced person, even unintentionally.

The two arrived at the park after being transported up from the Phoenix area.

The Town of Camp Verde is looking at using a little under $1 million in funding provided through the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona to finish improvements at the town’s wastewater treatment facility.The last approved improvement to Camp Verde’s wastewater treatment plant is the repair or replacement of the ultraviolet sanitation system, which has never worked properly. The current unit runs overtime without pause and overheats. Additionally, each UV plug must be cleaned of baked-on debris due to constant running, which shortens the life of the plug.

The Town of Camp Verde is looking at possible projects to fund with federal money from Community Development Block Grants.The public of Camp Verde is asked to help prioritize projects funded through the Community Development Block Grant. One area suggested for improvement is adding a sidewalk to Seventh Street leading to Finnie Flat Road. However, the project would be costly and has not been pre-qualified.

While many people all over the Verde Valley are doing their best to get into the Christmas spirit, a few of them are working behind the scenes to bring that spirit to children who otherwise might not experience it.Patricia Kaminsky, of Camp Verde, is the driving force behind the town’s Adopt-a-Family program. Families wishing for help contact her with their needs, and people wishing to help out bring her  donations. The program has been going on for many years. It started with Kaminsky seeking to help one family and it grew from there.
