7-year-old spearheads second march honoring Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

For the second year in a row, efforts are in the works to continue one Camp Verde boy’s dream to honor the late civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Portraits of slain civil RIGHTS LEADER Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were held in nearly every hand of marchers in Camp Verde’s first MLK Day parade up and down Main Street on Jan. 16, 2012. Approximately 300 people from around the Verde Valley joined march civic-minded Chandler Plante, 7, who organized the parade with the help of his family. This year, Yavapai County AmeriCorps Project Outreach Coordinator Adrienne Martin hopes to help Plante increase turnout Monday, Jan. 21.Every January since 1986, a day is set aside as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, though Arizona didn’t recognize the day until the 1990s.

Chandler Plante, 7, is probably one of the few boys in town his age that enjoys wearing neckties regularly and can often be found in his Sunday best on any given day that ends in Y. Last year, Chandler set out early to collect signatures from people around town, proving there was an interest in holding such an event. After going before the Camp Verde Town Council to get permission, Chandler was able to rally around 300 people to the cause for a march down Main Street.
